Real Salt Lake owner Dell Loy Hansen has decided to begin a process to sell Utah Soccer Holdings, which owns Real Salt Lake, MLS confirmed in a statement.
Hansen will also be selling Royals FC, which plays in the NWSL, and the USL’s Real Monarchs.
“MLS will work with Mr. Hansen on supporting the sale efforts for the company and will work closely with the club’s executive staff to support the operations of the team during the transition period,” MLS commissioner Don Garber wrote in a statement.
“I want to acknowledge Dell Loy Hansen’s significant efforts to build the sport of soccer in the state of Utah and for his commitment to Major League Soccer.”
The Real Salt Lake owner was taking a leave of absence from his duties after making controversial comments about his team boycotting its game on Wednesday as a response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis.
Hansen didn’t take kindly to his players opting to sit out their match and let his stance be known on Salt Lake City radio.
“It’s like someone stabbed you and then you’re trying to figure out a way to pull the knife out and move forward. That’s what it feels like. The disrespect was profound to me, personally,” Hansen said Thursday morning on X96.
